The computer antagonist in

2001: A Space Odyssey — HAL aka “HAL 9000” — is the 13th greatest villain in film history, according to the American Film Institute (AFI).

 

Not unlike Hal Cantor, HAL 9000 is capable of speech recognition, lip reading, reasoning, facial recognition, art appreciation, reproducing emotional behavior, and of course:  chess.

 

Though it’s a widely held rumor that HAL was named after the three initials before I.B.M., he is actually a Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer.
